In 1988, with a degree in Anthropology and Philosophy, a love of books, and a stutter that made me self-conscious and reticent to speak in public, I was sent to a small gold-mining town 800 kilometres north of Perth, as a welfare officer. My first task was to escort a 14-year-old girl to a juvenile detention centre in Perth. So began a three-year rollercoaster ride in welfare that continues, 30-odd years later, to influence much of my writing.
Since then I’ve worked as a barman, anthropologist, historian, editor, archivist, writer and currently lecture at the University of South Australia. I have a doctorate on the moral subtext of Aboriginal oral history and am the author of a history (The Last Protector) a collection of short stories (The Colour of Kerosene), two short films, and a novel (First Person Shooter).
I have coached public speaking for Rostrum Australia, and have twice been a finalist in their South Australian speaker of the year competition.
