In 1988, with a degree in Anthropology and Philosophy, a love of books, and a stutter that made me self-conscious and reticent to speak in public, I was sent to a small gold-mining town 800 kilometres north of Perth, as a welfare officer. My first task was to escort a 14-year-old girl to a juvenile detention centre in Perth. So began a three-year rollercoaster ride in welfare that continues, 30-odd years later, to influence much of my writing.
Since then I’ve worked as a barman, anthropologist, historian, editor, archivist, writer and currently lecture at the University of South Australia. I have a doctorate on the moral subtext of Aboriginal oral history and am the author of a history (The Last Protector) a collection of short stories (The Colour of Kerosene), two short films, and a novel (First Person Shooter).
I have coached public speaking for Rostrum Australia, and have twice been a finalist in their South Australian speaker of the year competition.

Aimee is a writer and critic. She’s the small screens editor at The Big Issue and pop culture columnist at The Lifted Brow. Her work appears on Literary Hub, Little White Lies, The Guardian, Kill Your Darlings, Overland, Meanjin and more.

In 2016, Aimee was selected for Melbourne International Film Festival’s Critics Campus. Since then, she’s appeared at National Young Writers’ Festival, Emerging Writers’ Festival and Digital Writers’ Festival. She’s been a Writer in Residence at SA Writers Centre, and was an inaugural Arts Writer in Residence at The Mill. She was a runner-up in the 2020 KYD New Critic Award.

Based on Kaurna yerta, Aimee is writing a creative nonfiction book about Jim Henson’s cultural legacy.
